Healthy Pizza Rolls Recipe

Pizza rolls were a popular after-school snack in the 90’s. You can find them in the frozen section of any grocery store. You can easily cook them in the conventional oven or toaster oven. As frozen pizza rolls are processed food products, they can contain preservatives and other ingredients which can be harmful to one’s health. Skip buying frozen pizza rolls and just make them at home.

You will be surprised how simple and quick homemade pizza rolls can be, even your kids can make them on their own. This recipe uses jarred marinara sauce, pepperoni, and mozzarella cheese for the filling. The rolled wheat tortillas are brushed with olive oil, then topped off with parmesan cheese which will give an extra crunch and added flavor to the baked pizza rolls.

Ingredients:

• 2 large wheat tortillas
• ¼ cup of marinara sauce
• ½ cup of shredded mozzarella cheese
• 14 pieces of pepperoni
• 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
• 1 tbsp parmesan cheese

Instructions:

This recipe takes about 15 minutes to make. Serves 8 rolls.

Preheat oven to 350°F.
Place tortillas on a baking sheet.
Spread the marinara sauce on the wheat tortillas.
Sprinkle parmesan cheese on top of the sauce leaving an inch of space on the edges.
Arrange pepperoni slices on top of the cheese.
Roll the tortillas making sure that they are tight enough so they don’t open up while baking.
Brush the top with olive oil, then sprinkle parmesan cheese.
Using a sharp knife, cut the log into 4 equal portions.
Bake in the oven at 350°F for 8 minutes.

Ideas And Tips:

• You can use other ingredients for the filling such as mushrooms, olives, bell peppers, onions, pineapples, bacon, ham, chicken or basil leaves.

• Make it a fun and productive activity with your kids. Let them assemble their own pizza roll with whatever filling they like; just make sure they don’t over-stuff the tortilla.
