English Scones Recipe

An English scone is a classic flour-based small cake. It has a “cult following” in the UK and has now become famous worldwide. English scones are traditionally served mid-afternoon as part of what is known as a “cream tea”. The scones are served with bowls of butter, strawberry jam and fresh clotted cream – and served together with a pot of hot tea. Unbeatable!

Ingredients:

• 3 cups all-purpose flour
• 2 tbsp baking powder
• 3 tbsp sugar
• a pinch of salt
• 60 grams cold butter
• 250 ml regular milk + some more for garnishing

Instructions:

This recipe takes about 30 minutes to prepare and cook. It makes ten scones.

Preheat oven to 420 F.

In a mixing bowl, add 3 cups of all-purpose flour.
Add 2 tbsp of baking powder, 3 tbsp of sugar, and a pinch of salt.
Mix until well combined.
Add 60 grams of cold butter.
Mix the butter into the flour mixture using your fingertips.
Once well combined, pour 250 ml of milk.
Mix until well combined.
Once dough is thick and well combined, transfer into a flour-dusted work surface.
Flatten it into a round dough with an inch thick.
Cut into round pieces using a cookie cutter.
It should make ten round pieces.
Place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
Leave a little space in between each round dough pieces.
Brush each dough with a little milk.
Place inside the preheated oven.
Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
Once done, remove from the oven and let them cool.
Top it off with your favorite jam and whipped cream.

Serve and enjoy!

Tips: You could also add hazelnuts, apricots currants, raisins or other dried fruit to your scone mix to turn them into “fruit scones”.
