How To Make American Lasagna

Lasagna is a dish traditionally made with layers of pasta sheets, Bolognese sauce, spinach-ricotta filling, béchamel sauce, and more cheese. It is an Italian dish that is popular and loved all over the world. Today we are sharing with you the American take on the classic Italian dish. The meat sauce is made from slowly simmered lean ground beef with tomatoes and herbs. The ricotta filling has no spinach in it. There is also no béchamel sauce used in this recipe. This American lasagna is appealing to the eyes as well as to the taste buds. Once you’ve tried making this recipe at home, it will surely be your staple meat lasagna recipe.


• 1 ½ pounds of lean ground beef
• 1 onion, chopped
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 tbsp chopped fresh basil
• 1 tsp dried oregano
• 2 tbsp brown sugar
• 1 ½ tsp salt
• 1 29-oz can of diced tomatoes
• 2 6-oz cans of tomato paste
• 12 dry lasagna sheets
• 2 eggs, beaten
• 1 pint of part-skim ricotta cheese
• ½ cup of grated parmesan cheese
• 2 tbsp dried parsley
• 1 tsp salt
• 1 pound of shredded mozzarella cheese
• 2 tbsp grated parmesan cheese


This recipe takes about 2 hours to make. Serves 8.

Sauté lean ground beef in a pan over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes.
Add onions and garlic and sauté for 5 minutes.
Remove excess fat from the pan.
Add basil, dried oregano, brown sugar, and 1 1/2 tsp salt.
Mix, then add tomato paste and diced tomatoes.
Stir and turn the heat down to low.
Simmer for 30 to 35 minutes, stirring occasionally.
While the sauce simmer, cook the lasagna sheets according to packet instructions.
To make the ricotta filling, mix beaten eggs, part-skim ricotta cheese, parmesan cheese, dried parsley, and 1 tsp salt in a bowl.
Preheat oven to 375°F.
To assemble the dish, start by spreading a thin layer of the sauce on the bottom of a 9″x13″ baking dish.
Arrange 4 lasagna sheets on top of the sauce.
Spread half of the ricotta filling on top of the lasagna sheets.
Sprinkle ½ pound of mozzarella cheese on top of the ricotta filling.
Spread ⅓ of the sauce on top of the cheese.
Repeat building the layers starting with the lasagna sheets, then the ricotta filling, the rest of the mozzarella cheese, and ⅓ of the sauce.
Arrange the rest of the lasagna sheets, then top with the remaining sauce.
Sprinkle grated parmesan cheese on top.
Cover the baking dish with a greased aluminum foil.
Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour.
Remove the aluminum foil. then bake for another 20 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
Let the dish cool for about 10 minutes for slicing and serving.

Ideas And Tips:

• The dish can be prepared up to 2 days in advance. Cover the dish and store in the fridge until ready to bake.

Healthy Pizza Rolls Recipe

Pizza rolls were a popular after-school snack in the 90’s. You can find them in the frozen section of any grocery store. You can easily cook them in the conventional oven or toaster oven. As frozen pizza rolls are processed food products, they can contain preservatives and other ingredients which can be harmful to one’s health. Skip buying frozen pizza rolls and just make them at home.

You will be surprised how simple and quick homemade pizza rolls can be, even your kids can make them on their own. This recipe uses jarred marinara sauce, pepperoni, and mozzarella cheese for the filling. The rolled wheat tortillas are brushed with olive oil, then topped off with parmesan cheese which will give an extra crunch and added flavor to the baked pizza rolls.


• 2 large wheat tortillas
• ¼ cup of marinara sauce
• ½ cup of shredded mozzarella cheese
• 14 pieces of pepperoni
• 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
• 1 tbsp parmesan cheese


This recipe takes about 15 minutes to make. Serves 8 rolls.

Preheat oven to 350°F.
Place tortillas on a baking sheet.
Spread the marinara sauce on the wheat tortillas.
Sprinkle parmesan cheese on top of the sauce leaving an inch of space on the edges.
Arrange pepperoni slices on top of the cheese.
Roll the tortillas making sure that they are tight enough so they don’t open up while baking.
Brush the top with olive oil, then sprinkle parmesan cheese.
Using a sharp knife, cut the log into 4 equal portions.
Bake in the oven at 350°F for 8 minutes.

• You can use other ingredients for the filling such as mushrooms, olives, bell peppers, onions, pineapples, bacon, ham, chicken or basil leaves.

• Make it a fun and productive activity with your kids. Let them assemble their own pizza roll with whatever filling they like; just make sure they don’t over-stuff the tortilla.

Chicken Cheese Balls

Stuffed chicken ball is one of the fun twists to the classic meatball. These are usually sold in the frozen section of the grocery stores. You can just easily fry them at home when you need something quick to feed your kids. The downside is, the ones you buy in the market can be loaded with a lot of preservatives or other low quality ingredients. You can make these meatballs at home.

This chicken cheese balls recipe is quick and easy to prepare. You can even store them in the freezer for up to 2 weeks. Just like store-bought ones, take them out of the freezer, thaw and fry them. You have something quick to serve your family without the unhealthy preservatives.


• 250 grams of chicken breast, cut into chunks
• 1 spring onion
• 2 cloves garlic, chopped
• 1 tsp chopped ginger
• 1 tbsp vegetable shortening
• ¾ tsp salt
• ¼ tsp chili flakes
• ½ tsp paprika
• ½ tsp hot sauce
• ¼ tsp sugar
• ¼ tsp baking soda
• 1 egg yolk
• ⅓ cup of water
• ½ cup of all-purpose flour
• ¼ cup of cornstarch
• ½ tsp salt
• 1 egg white
• 2 tbsp milk
• crushed nacho chips
• ¾ cup of shredded mozzarella cheese
• ⅛ tsp Italian seasoning
• oil for deep frying


This recipe takes about 1 hour to make. Serves 20 balls.

Put chicken breast, spring onion, garlic, and ginger in a food processor.
Pulse until chicken is minced.
Transfer to a mixing bowl.
Add vegetable shortening, salt, chili flakes, paprika, hot sauce, sugar, baking soda, egg yolk, and water.
Mix together until all the ingredients are well incorporated.
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and place it in a refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
In a bowl, mix egg white and milk.
In a separate bowl, mix all-purpose flour, cornstarch, and salt.
Put crushed nacho chips in another bowl.
To prepare the filling, mix shredded mozzarella cheese and Italian seasoning in a small bowl.
Form chicken mixture into 20 balls.
Flatten each ball and put cheese filling in the center.
Pull the edges to the center to enclose the filling and form into a smooth ball.
Coat each ball with flour.
Dip in egg mixture.
Coat with crushed nacho chips.
Deep-fry chicken balls over medium heat at 170°C for 2 to 3 minutes.
Place wire rack or a plate lined with paper towel to drain excess oil.

Ideas And Tips:

• Instead of crushed nacho chips, you can also use panko breadcrumbs, crushed oatmeal or even crushed cornflakes.

• You can skip the hot sauce if you don’t want the chicken balls to be spicy, especially if you’re serving them to kids.
