Marinated Baked Tofu

Tofu is also known as bean curd. It is a product made by coagulating soy milk and then pressed together to turn it into blocks. Tofu is a popular ingredient in East and Southeast Asian cuisine. It can be cooked in a variety of ways but the more popular one is stir-frying. Tofu is often seasoned or marinated as it does not have that much flavor. It acts like a sponge as it soaks up the seasoning or marinade added to it. Tofu is a popular choice for weight conscious people because of its low-calorie count. It is high in protein and iron.

This recipe shows a simple marinade for tofu. After a few hours, tofu is baked in the oven so it becomes crispy on the outside but creamy soft on the inside.


• 1 pack of extra firm tofu
• 1 tbsp of ginger garlic paste
• 1 tsp of chili paste
• 1 tbsp of soy sauce
• 1 tbsp of rice vinegar
• 1 tbsp of mirin
• 1 tbsp of Trader Joe’s Thai Dry Chili Paste
• 1 tsp of sugar
• 1 tsp of sesame oil
• Potato or cornstarch for dusting


This recipe takes 5 minutes to make. The tofu needs to sit in the marinade for 2 to 8 hours. Baking the tofu takes 30 to 45 minutes. Serves 1 to 2.

Remove the tofu from the package.
Pat dry using a paper towel.
Once dry, cut the tofu into the desired size. Set aside.
In a Ziplock bag, mix together the ingredients to make the marinade: chili paste, soy sauce, rice vinegar, mirin, sugar, and sesame oil.
Mash together ginger and garlic until they turn into a paste.
Add this paste into the Ziplock bag with the marinade.
Place the chopped tofu inside the bag and mix together with the marinade.
Put the bag in the fridge for 2 to 8 hours.
Preheat the oven to 350F.
Place foil on a baking sheet. Line up marinated tofu on the sheet.
Sprinkle potato or cornstarch on all sides of the tofu.
Bake in the oven for 30 to 45 minutes and rotate in between.
Add some water to the marinade to turn it into a dipping sauce.

Ideas And Tips:

• You can experiment with the marinade depending on what you prefer. Mirin is a Japanese condiment that is a type of rice wine. It is similar to sake but with lower alcohol levels. You can use any rice wine you can find.
