Fatayer (Veggie Fatayer) Recipe

Fatayer is a Middle Eastern meat pie that can also be filled with spinach or cheese. But what to do when you like the taste of the fatayer filled with meat, but you would prefer not to eat meat? This recipe is the right one for you then! It is not difficult to make and it is totally delicious.

Ingredients:

• 2 1/2 Cup All-Purpose Flour
• 3.5 oz (100g) Textured Soy Protein
• 1/2 Bunch (1 oz / 30g) Parsley
• 1 Cup Plain Yogurt
• 1 Onion
• 2 Garlic Cloves
• 1/3 Cup Olive Oil
• 2 Tbsp Vegetable Oil
• 2 Tsp Instant Yeast
• 1/2 Cup Marinara Sauce
• 1/2 Tsp Salt
• 1 Tsp Sugar
• Curry Seasoning
• Ground Chili
• Pepper
• Salt

Instructions:

Dough:
Combine yogurt, salt, sugar, instant yeast, and olive oil.
Gradually whisk in flour.
Knead for 5 minutes.
Grease a bowl with olive oil and transfer the dough.
Cover the bowl and let rise for 45 minutes.

Filling:
Soak the soy protein in water for 30 minutes.
Dice the onion.
Fry the onion in vegetable oil until it gets golden.
Stir in the curry seasoning, ground chili pepper, and mashed garlic cloves.
Drain the soy protein and add to onions.
Cook on medium for 3 minutes.
Stir in salt.
Mince the parsley and stir it in.
Add the marinara sauce, stir, and cook for 10 minutes.
Divide the dough into smaller pieces.
Roll the pieces into thin oval shapes.
Add the amount of filling of your choice.
Seal the edges, leaving the middle open.
Place the fatayers on parchment-lined baking sheet.
Preheat the oven to 400F/204°C.
Bake the fatayers for 16 minutes.

Fatayers are, thanks to their small size, ideal snacks or appetizers.

Fatayers can be stored in the refrigerator for a couple of days too.
