How To Make Swiss Roll Cake | Basic Roll Cake Recipe

A Swiss roll cake is a delicious and fluffy sponge cake with some fruit jam (and sometimes creamy soft icing) as its filling. The basic sponge is made from eggs, flour, and milk. You can serve it as a dessert or snack.

• 5 egg yolks
• 1 gram salt
• 50 grams sugar

• 5 egg whites
• 70 grams sugar

• 90 grams cake flour
• 2 grams baking powder
• 50 grams milk
• 50 grams vegetable oil
• some fruit jam or honey

Preheat oven to 170 C.

In a medium mixing bowl, add five egg yolks.
Add a gram of salt, then mix to combine.
Add 50 grams of sugar, then mix using an electric handheld mixer.
Continue to mix until light and smooth.
Set aside.

In a separate mixing bowl, add five egg whites.
Whip using an electric handheld mixer.
Continue to whip until foamy and volume has increased.
Gradually add 70 grams of sugar in three portions, then whip.
Continue to whip until stiff peaks form.
Transfer the egg yolk mixture into the egg white mixture.
Fold using a spatula until well combined.
Sift in 90 grams of cake flour and 2 grams of baking powder.
Fold batter until well combined.
Make sure there are no lumps and the texture is smooth.

Prepare another mixing bowl.
Add 50 grams of milk and 50 grams of vegetable oil.
Transfer some batter into the bowl.
Mix until well combined.
Pour this mixture back into the bowl of the remaining batter.
Fold until well combined.
Pour into a parchment-lined baking dish.
Spread to level off height of 4-4.5 cm, then smoothen surface.
Tap the dish gently to remove any bubbles.
Place it inside the preheated oven.
Bake for 30 minutes.
Once done, remove the dish from the oven.
Remove the cake from the baking dish, then peel away the parchment paper.
Put it on another sheet of parchment paper.
Remove half an inch of all sides of the cake.
On one side, make a diagonal cut.
Make 3 mm deep cut (do not cut completely) on every inch of the cake’s surface.
Spread some strawberry jam or any fruit jam on the cake’s surface.
Roll the cake up tightly with the help of the parchment paper.
Seal the parchment paper.
Place the cake roll in the fridge for an hour.
After an hour, remove it from the fridge.
Peel away the parchment paper.
Slice to equal portions.
Serve and enjoy!
