Original Orange Chicken Recipe

Dinner or lunch will be extra-special with this original orange chicken dish! Coated bite-sized chicken cubes are fried in a sweet and spicy glaze. Complete your meal and serve with rice and hearty mixed veggies.

Ingredients:

• 2 lbs chicken thighs (chopped into bite-sized cubes)
• 1 tsp sesame oil
• some oil (for deep frying)

Batter:

• 1 tbsp salt
• 1 tsp white pepper
• 1 cup cornstarch
• 3 cups flour
• 1 egg
• 1.5 cups water
• 2 tbsp oil

Glaze:

• 1 tsp vegetable oil
• 1/4 tsp chili flakes
• 1/2 tsp ginger (minced)
• 1 tbsp garlic (minced)
• 1/4 cup sugar
• 1/4 cup brown sugar
• 1/4 cup orange juice
• 1/4 cup vinegar
• 2 tbsp soy sauce
• 2 tbsp cornstarch slurry

Instructions:

Batter:

Prepare a mixing bowl.
Add salt, white pepper, cornstarch and flour.
Whisk to combine.
Add egg.
Gradually add water while whisking the mixture.
Add oil, then whisk until the batter is smooth.

Add the chopped chicken thighs into the batter.
Toss to coat well.
Cover the bowl with clingfilm.
Put it in the fridge and let it chill for 30 minutes.
Once done, deep fry the coated chicken cubes until golden brown.
Once fried, transfer to a plate and let it cool.

Glaze:

Set a frying pan over medium heat.
Add vegetable oil and heat it.
Add chili flakes, minced ginger and minced garlic.
Saute for 30 seconds until fragrant.
Add sugar and brown sugar.
Stir to combine.
Pour orange juice.
Stir and let it simmer.
Once it simmers, add vinegar, soy sauce and cornstarch slurry.
Stir until the glaze thickens.
Add the chicken cubes into the glaze.
Stir to coat well.
Drizzle some sesame oil.
Stir well.
Remove from the heat and transfer to a plate.
Serve and enjoy!
