This vegan chicken sandwich recipe uses precooked seitan patties which are then coated with flour that has been seasoned with a blend of spices to imitate that signature “Chick-Fil-A” taste. Vegan or not, you will surely love this healthier alternative to the classic chicken sandwich.
Seitan is a vegan meat alternative. It is basically a dough made from vital wheat gluten and a binding liquid. The dough is then boiled, steamed or baked to create a meat-like texture. You can buy pre-made seitan in the refrigerated section of supermarkets and health food stores but you can also make it at home. What’s really good about seitan is that you can season it any way you like. Another important step that affects the texture of seitan is kneading. It helps develop gluten and gives elasticity and stretch to the dough. Imitating lighter meat textures such as fish or chicken requires less kneading than imitating tougher meats such as pork or beef.
• 4 precooked seitan chicken patties
• 2 cups of flour
• 3 tsp paprika
• 2 tsp cracked black pepper
• ⅓ cup of powdered sugar
• 1 tbsp cayenne pepper
• 1 tsp salt
• 1 tsp chili powder
• 1 tsp baking powder
• 1 tsp garlic powder
• “egg replacer” equal to 4 eggs
• ¼ cup of pickle juice
• 1 tsp hot sauce
• 4 burger buns
• pickle medallions
• 4 slices of vegan cheese
• 2 cups of oil
This recipe takes about 45 minutes to make. Serves 4.
In a large mixing bowl, place all the dry ingredients flour, paprika, cracked black pepper, powdered sugar, cayenne pepper, salt, chili powder, baking powder, and garlic powder.
Whisk together the until everything is well combined.
In a separate bowl, mix together egg replacer, pickle juice, and hot sauce.
Coat each chicken patty with the flour mixture.
Dip in egg mixture the give it a final coating of the flour mixture.
Heat oil in a deep fryer over medium heat until the temperature reaches 325°F.
Fry each patty for 4 to 5 minutes on each side or until crust is golden brown.
Drain on a plate lined with paper towel.
To build the sandwich, place a slice of cheese on the bottom half of the bun.
Lay chicken patty on top of the cheese.
Top with pickle medallions.
Cover with the top half of the bun and serve immediately.
Ideas And Tips:
• “Egg replacer” is a powdered product that comes in a box. If you don’t have egg replacer, you can use ¾ cup of plain unsweetened soy milk.
• You can sprinkle more chili powder on the fried chicken patties for an added kick.
• This recipe gives you a version of the spicy sandwich sold in Chick-Fil-A stores but if you want to load it with more vegetable slices, you can add tomato, onion, and lettuce.
• Using powdered sugar may seem unusual but this will give you a nice crispy breading.
