This blooming onion is savory and crunchy on the outside yet sweet and soft on the inside. This restaurant-worthy blooming onion is perfect for your next party at home. Ingredients:
This recipe takes about 75 minutes to make. Serves 1 blooming onion.
• 1 large sweet yellow onion, peeled
• 2 ½ cups of all-purpose flour
• 2 tbsp paprika
• 1 tsp cayenne pepper
• 1 tsp seasoned salt
• 1 tsp garlic powder
• ½ tsp dried oregano
• ½ tsp ground black pepper
• 2 large eggs
• 1 cup of whole milk
• 1 gallon of corn oil
Dipping Sauce:
• 2 tbsp mayonnaise
• 2 tbsp sour cream
• 1 ½ tsp ketchup
• ½ tsp Worcestershire sauce
• 1 tbsp drained horseradish
• ¼ tsp paprika
• 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
• ¼ tsp salt
• ⅛ tsp ground black pepper
Instructions:
To prepare the onion, cut off the top, then place the onion topside down on the cutting board.
Using a sharp knife, make 1/2-inch cuts in a circular motion to create petals.
Flip the onion over and remove the small, loose onion pieces in the center.
In a large bowl, mix together all-purpose flour, paprika, cayenne pepper, seasoned salt, garlic powder, oregano, and black pepper to make the breading mix.
In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs and whole milk to make an egg wash.
Carefully place the onion into the bowl of breading mix.
Coat each onion petal well with the seasoned flour mixture.
Shake off any excess flour, then dip the onion in the egg wash.
Coat the onion again with the breading mix, then shake off any excess.
Freeze the breaded onion for 1 hour.
Meanwhile, prepare the dipping sauce.
Mix together mayonnaise, sour cream, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, horseradish, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper in a bowl.
Keep the dipping sauce in the fridge until you are ready to serve.
Heat corn oil in a large pot over high heat until the temperature reaches 400°F.
Carefully slide the onion, cut-side down into the hot oil.
Flash-fry the onion for 15 seconds then turn the heat down to medium.
Turn the onion over and continue frying for 6 to 8 minutes or until golden brown.
Place the onion, cut-side down on a plate lined with paper towel to drain excess oil.
To serve, place the blooming onion on a serving dish.
Pour dipping sauce in a small sauce bowl, then place it in the center of the blooming onion.
Ideas And Tips:
You can substitute whole milk with water, non-dairy milk, low-fat milk or non-fat milk.
Aside from corn oil, you can use soya oil, peanut oil, grape seed oil, sunflower oil, vegetable oil, safflower oil, rice bran oil or avocado oil.
It is recommended to season the blooming onion with salt as soon as you take it out from the oil.
