Tofu is a great alternative to meat. Vegetarians love tofu and it’s often a substitute for meat in their recipes. If you are looking for a tofu recipe that is meaty, crispy and delicious, this barbeque tofu recipe is just perfect. It’s perfect as a side dish or as topping to your fried rice or bowl of steamed white rice.
To achieve the crispness and meatiness for the tofu, there are three main cooking steps for this particular recipe. First, the tofu is baked so that it becomes firm making it easier to fry. Second, it is coated and fried in oil to give it a crisp coating. And third, it is stir-fried to coat it with the barbecue sauce. The third step makes this recipe delicious and very tasty. Below is the complete recipe for Crispy and Meaty Barbecue Tofu.
Makes about 3 servings
Ingredients:
• 1 pack firm or extra firm tofu
• 2 egg whites
• 2 Tbsp. for tofu coating plus ¾ cup barbecue sauce
• 1½ cups flour
• 2 Tsp. sugar (optional)
• 1½ Tsp. salt
• 1 Tsp. pepper
• 3 Tbsp. peanut oil (olive oil or vegetable oil is fine too)
Instructions:
Prepare the tofu.
If the tofu is packed in water, drain the water out and squeeze the tofu dry with paper towels. Cut it into 1 inch cubes. You can see how it’s done in the video below.
Bake the tofu.
Preheat oven to 400F. Grease the baking pan with vegetable oil and place the tofu cubes on the pan. Place baking pan inside the hot oven. Bake tofu for 15-20 minutes.
Let the tofu cubes cool.
After 20 minutes, remove the pan from the oven. Let the tofu cubes sit for about 20 minutes to cool them.
Coat the tofu cubes with the egg white and bbq sauce mixture.
In a large bowl whisk together the egg whites and the 2 tablespoons of barbecue sauce. Add the cool tofu cubes to this mixture. Mix or whisk together until tofu cubes are well coated.
Coat the tofu cubes with flour mixture.
In another large bowl, mix together the flour, salt, and pepper. Adding sugar is optional depending on your preference. Stir until everything is thoroughly combined.
Then add the pieces of tofu one or two at a time coating them evenly with the flour mixture. Leave them inside the bowl of the flour mixture. Once all coated the tofu cubes are ready to fry.
Fry the tofu cubes.
Heat a non-stick, shallow pan over medium high heat. Once pan is hot, add the peanut oil. Add the tofu cubes when oil is already hot. Cook the tofu about 1 minute on each side or until it’s golden brown. Make sure to keep the oil temperature at 350F so that the tofu cubes don’t burn.
Cook the tofu in the barbecue sauce.
After all the tofu cubes have been fried, remove from the pan onto a plate lined with paper towel. Prepare another pan. (You can use the same pan but you have to clean it before using.) Once pan is hot, add the fried tofu cubes. Add ¾ cup of barbecue sauce. Stir until hot and tofu cubes are well coated with the barbeque sauce.
Remove from pan and serve.
