Although churros are traditional in Spain and Portuguese, it is believed that churros actually originated in China, where the Portuguese first tasted youtiao, which are golden fried salty pastry eaten for breakfast. When the Portuguese came home, they recreated the delicacy but added sugar instead of flour. Churros are typically eaten for breakfast but they are also a favorite after-party snack. They are served in churrerías in Spain, which are often the first eateries to open in the morning and the last to close at night. Churros are easy to make, you don’t even need to knead the dough. With this recipe, you can make and enjoy this crispy, crunchy, tasty delicacy anytime.
Ingredients:
• 1 cup of water
• 3 tbsp unsalted butter
• 1 tbsp vegetable oil
• 1 tbsp granulated sugar
• ½ tsp salt
• 1 cup of all-purpose flour
• 4 eggs
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• 4 cups of vegetable/sunflower/other cooking oil
• ½ cup of granulated sugar
• 1 tsp ground cinnamon
Instructions:
This recipe takes about 30 minutes to make. Serves 6.
Heat vegetable oil in a Dutch oven over medium heat until the temperature reaches 375°F
Put water, unsalted butter, vegetable oil, sugar, and salt in a large saucepan.
Bring to boil over medium-high heat.
Add flour and stir continuously until the mixture forms a dough.
Continue cooking for 1 minute, then turn off heat.
Put the dough in a large mixing bowl and add vanilla extract.
Continue mixing for a couple of minutes to work the dough and cool it down.
Add egg 1 at a time while mixing until you get a smooth dough.
Put the dough in a piping bag with a star tip.
Mix sugar and cinnamon on a plate.
Pipe the 5-inch strings into the hot oil.
Fry the churros for 3 to 5 minutes or until golden brown.
Place the churros on a plate lined with paper towel just to drain off excess oil.
Coat churros with sugar-cinnamon mixture.
