Seitan Cheat Balls And Marinara Sauce

Seitan is a healthy substitute for meat. It is low in calories, high in proteins, and cholesterol-free which makes it a good choice for healthy living. Seitan is made from wheat gluten. It can be eaten as it is or you can add it to your vegan soup or prepare it as a barbecue. In this recipe, the seitan will be prepared as cheat balls with marinara sauce.


For the Seitan Cheat Balls:

• 1 1/2 cups vital wheat gluten
• 1/4 cup nutritional yeast
• 1/2 tsp black pepper
• 1 tbsp basil
• 1/2 tbsp oregano
• 1/2 tsp marjoram
• 1 tsp salt
• 1 tbsp soy sauce
• 1 tbsp rice vinegar
• 1 cup vegetable broth
• 2 tbsp olive oil
• 3 garlic cloves (chopped)
• 1 can tomato paste

For the Marinara Sauce:

• 1 onion (chopped)
• 4-6 garlic cloves (chopped)
• 2 x 28 oz can of diced tomatoes
• 2 x 6 oz can of tomato paste
• 2 tomato paste cans full of water
• 1 tbsp salt
• 1 tsp sugar
• 1 1/2 tsp black pepper
• 1/2 tbsp oregano
• olive oil (for sauteeing)


For the Seitan Cheat Balls:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a mixing bowl, add wheat gluten, nutritional yeast, basil, oregano, marjoram, and black pepper.
Whisk until well combined.
Set aside.

In a separate mixing bowl, add tomato paste, chopped garlic, rice vinegar, olive oil, soy sauce, salt to taste, and vegetable broth/stock.
Mix until well combined.
Add the mixture to the wheat gluten mixture.
Stir the mixture by using an electric mixer.
Mix to a medium speed until it becomes like a dough.
Once the desired texture is achieved, make the dough into 1-inch balls.
Set a casserole dish and lightly spray it with olive oil.
Place the cheat balls in the casserole dish and cover tightly with foil.
Place inside the preheated oven and let it cook for about an hour.
Once done, remove it from the oven.
Uncover the dish and set aside while making the marinara sauce.

For the Marinara Sauce:

Set a pot over medium flame.
Add some olive oil and heat it.
Saute chopped onion and garlic.
Add diced tomatoes, tomato paste, and two tomato paste cans full of water.
Add salt, sugar, black pepper, and oregano.
Mix well.
Bring the mixture to a boil.
Reduce heat and let it simmer for an hour, stirring once in a while.


Transfer the marinara sauce to a dish and add the seitan cheat balls. Serve and enjoy!

Tips and ideas:

If you want the marinara sauce to be a bit sweeter, then you can add more sugar to it.

If you are a spicy lover, then you can add red chili flakes.
