Cooking Korean Food: 2 Tofu Sidedishes

Tofu is made by coagulating soy milk and then processing it to make bean curd blocks. It is a popular ingredient in East and Southeast Asian cuisine. Tofu is often bland so it is usually covered in savory sauces. Tofu has a low-calorie count but it is rich in protein. There are two recipes below that transforms tofu into crispy slices mixed with soy sauce. Tofu does not take long to fry and it becomes golden brown on the outside but soft on the inside. These recipes are 100% vegan.


Pan-fried Tofu with Spicy Sauce (Dubu buchim yangnyumjang):

• 10 oz of tofu
• 2 tbsp of soy sauce
• Hot pepper flakes
• 1 tsp of sugar
• 1 stalk of green onion
• 1 clove of garlic
• 1 to 2 tsp of sesame oil
• Roasted sesame seeds

Pan-fried tofu in Soy Sauce (Dubu ganjang jorim):

• 10 oz of tofu
• 1 clove of garlic
• 1 tbsp of soy sauce
• 1 tbsp of corn syrup
• Black sesame seeds


Pan-fried Tofu with Spicy Sauce (Dubu buchim yangnyumjang):

This recipe takes about 15 minutes to make. Serves 2.

Rinse the tofu and pat dry using paper towels.
Cut the tofu in half and then cut into thin strips until you have around 20 pieces.
Pour some oil on a frying pan and make sure it coats the pan entirely.
Place the pan over low heat.
Fry the tofu slices for 7 minutes until they turn golden brown and crispy. Flip them over to cook the other side for a few more minutes.
In a small bowl, pour soy sauce and season with hot pepper flakes, sugar, green onion, garlic, and sesame oil.
Mix the ingredients together.
Place the tofu slices on a plate.
Pour the sauce over the tofu.
Garnish with roasted sesame seeds.

Pan-fried tofu in Soy Sauce (Dubu ganjang jorim):

This recipe takes about 10 minutes to make.

In a frying pan, pan-fry the tofu slices for about 7 minutes on each side until they turn golden brown and crispy.
Add garlic, soy sauce, and corn syrup into the pan.
Stir them with the tofu slices and turn off the heat.
Place the tofu slices on a plate.
Garnish with black sesame seeds.

Ideas And Tips:

• It is important that the tofu slices are patted dry so that it turns crispy when fried.

• You can substitute sugar with honey or maple syrup.
