Eaten worldwide and a staple food in many countries, bread has been around for many generations. Conveniently, you can purchase packaged bread from any grocery store. You will even see on the label “fortified with vitamins and minerals”. As healthy as it sounds, these vitamins and minerals are synthetic ones. As commercially prepared bread is a highly-processed food product, the ingredients’ natural nutrients are destroyed. Raw bread is a good substitute for highly processed store-bought bread.
With this recipe, you can easily make gluten-free and sugar-free raw onion bread at home. This recipe only uses 5 ingredients. The best part is, you can use a conventional oven if you don’t have a food dehydrator. So whether you are in a raw food diet or simply want to eat healthier, these tasty, soft, moist, pliable, and nutritious bread slices are perfect for your sandwiches
Ingredients:
This recipe takes about 20 minutes to make. The bread slices need to be dehydrated overnight. Serves 6 to 8 bread slices.
• 3 large onions
• 1 cup of ground flax seeds
• 1 cup of ground sunflower seeds
• ½ cup of nama shoyu
• ⅓ cup of cold pressed extra virgin olive oil
Instructions:
Cut the onions into smaller pieces, then put them in a food processor.
Run the food processor just until the onions are finely chopped but not mashed.
Mix together ground flax seeds, ground sunflower seeds, chopped onions, nama shoyu, and olive oil in a bowl.
Form the bread mixture into bread slices, then put them on the dehydrator tray lined with a teflex sheet.
Dehydrate the bread slices overnight at 115°F.
Turn the bread slices over and put them again in the dehydrator for another hour to dry the other side.
Ideas And Tips:
Aside from onions, you can use carrots, zucchini
You can substitute name shoyu with liquid aminos.
If the dough is too watery, add more flax seeds.
Add a little water if the dough is too pasty.
You can use parchment paper if you don’t have a teflex sheet. As food dehydrates faster on parchment paper than a teflex sheet, you don’t need to flip the bread slices to dry the other side.
If you don’t have a food dehydrator, you can use the oven. Put the oven to its lowest temperature setting and keep the door slightly open.
The bread slices can last for up to two weeks in the refrigerator. Make sure to put them in a sealed container.
